Japanese Food in Malaysia

Dear reader,

After the long long blog postsss of my trip to Japan, here I am continuing the blog with more Japanese food, but they are all in Malaysia!

I feel really glad that Malaysia have a lotttttt of decent Japanese food which can satisfy my cravings from sushi to teishoku to ramen.

Let's start the long list of Japanese restaurants which I have tried (and love). This post MIGHT have a part two as I found out that I have loads of pictures yet to be posted hahaha~

Zipangu @ Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur

First of all, this is not the random restaurant that I would go in on normal days (can't afford to). I actually went with kareshi for celebration of anniversary hehe~ As a restaurant in a 5-star hotel, the price is as expected to be on the higher side. Really grateful and happy that even though it's pricey, the food actually taste really good!

Kareshi ordered a wagyu steak set while ME being a fan of seafood, I got myself a ikura don set ❤

Australian Wagyu steak. Yummm~

Set comes with rice and miso soup

Look at the pretty yummy ruby~宝石みたい!

Croissant Taiyaki @ Pavilion Shopping Mall

I think this shop might be familiar to most people and I noticed it is always beside Gindaco(?). Anyway their Taiyaki is really crispy! I didn't have much expectation to it (sorry XD, cuz Taiyaki doesn't appeal to me much) but it turns out to be quite good. Maybe I will try Taiyaki in Japan next time.

I got the traditional red bean paste filling

Sobaya Shige @ Isetan LOT 10

Hands down the best soba I've ever tasted in Malaysia. They serve authentic soba noodles set (comes with sushi or appetizer). If you prefer rice, they serve rice bowls as well. Their recommended dish was actually the duck udon, but I was in the mood for soba that day. I remember my sister ordered the cold soba and it was so delicious! Even better than mine.

Not sure if it's true since I have not been to LOT10 for quite some time, but my sister told me that the shop had closed down. 😢

Yayoi-ken @ LOT10

One of my favourite place for teishoku (Japanese set meal). Price is slightly higher but if you can get delicious meal with such portion, I think it's worth the price. I particularly love their Hitsumabushi (a specialty unagi rich bowl from Nagoya), which you can enjoy it in 3 ways.

Hitsumabushi set comes with steamed rice, dashi soup (the kettle), agedashi tofu (deep fried tofu) and some condiments.

Salmon Hitsumabushi

Go for this one if you prefer milder flavor

Unagi hitsumabushi

Best unagi I have ever tasted, almost melt in my mouth

They even give you a guide card on how to enjoy your Hitsumabushi:

1. Divide the rice into 4 portions.
2. For the first portion, enjoy the original taste of the rice.
3. For the second portion, enjoy by adding in the condiments to the rice.
4. For the third portion, add in the dashi soup to make it into an ochazuke (rice with soup).
5. Eat it your own way for the fourth portion!

Personally I love ochazuke way the most hehe~

Hana Dining Sake bar

Hana dining is one of my fav place to go for rice bowl, plus it is in Sunway Pyramid (my fav shopping mall lol). I had my first Engawa don here as well! Engawa = flounder fish/flatfish fin or muscles. The texture is soft and oily plus melt in your mouth.

Senya Dining @ 1Utama Shopping Mall

Generous amount of meat and rice with reasonable price! They serve various japanese dish but their signature dish is the Hokkaido pork rice bowl. Rice bowl fully covered with pork slices, served with miso soup and pickles.

Signature Hokkaido grilled pork with salmon

Grilled to perfection

Menya Hanabi @ Sri Petaling

Okay, I have to admit that before I visited this shop I have no idea there is food called mazesoba (literal translation: mix noodles. It's actually dry noodles mix with various ingredients including vegetables and meat). The dish is flavorful as you can taste different ingredients in one bowl, however, it is my least favourite Japanese noodles dish :( I still prefer ramen and tsukemen (dipping noodles).

Their dumplings were quite yummy too!

IPPUDO @ Sunway Pyramid

Whenever I am craving for ramen, Ippudo it is! And again it is in Sunway Pyramid hahaha~ I wonder why Ichiran never make its way to Malaysia, but luckily Ippudo is here to serve us authentic Japanese ramen.

Seasonal Wakayama ramen

Their shoyu ramen (soysauce ramen) is super delicious that I was in shock when I had the first bite!! I usually go for their tonkotsu ramen but ever since I gave their shoyu ramen a try, I became a huge fan.

Shoyu ramen, super flavorful with soysauce aroma and not too salty

KAGURA Chicken Ramen @ LOT10

If you are looking for pork-free ramen, this is the place as they serve ramen with chicken broth~ This brand is originated from Tokyo serving ramen in thick chicken broth (all the collagen wow!). Their chicken char-siew is amazing!

Curee @ Jalan Imbi

As you can see from the name, this shop with cool and quiet ambiance is serving curry! But not the common Malaysia curry, they serve Hokkaido curry! Hokkaido curry is different from the typical Japanese curry as they are soup curry which is milder in flavor and not as thick in texture as the common curry.

If I can go back to KL I would love to pay this place another visit. I miss their curry so much 😢

Vegetable curry with avocado

Warakuya @ Puchong

Huge Japanese restaurant with extensive menu. And the place is always packed and you would expect traffic jam nearby the restaurant (not now anymore I guess during this pandemic). Their food taste above average for me but I particularly like their salmon sashimi don. Pretty to look at and nice to eat hehe~

Will end this food post here. Upcoming blog would be Singapore trip~ I actually went Singapore twice, in Oct 2018 and Oct 2019 hahaha. Not gonna separate the trips to two posts this time.

Till next post, xoxo
